Have you ever been scared of your dreams?

I am not talking about the ones you had when you were younger or maybe even as an adult, when you saw a boogeyman under your bed 🙂

I am referring to the ones that really scare you, the ones that require action, the ones that require effort, commitment, stamina, patience and resilience.

The ones that may not end well but they may also end beautifully. The ones that force you to stay for the long haul because you have put your all into it.

These dreams can seem like they have no end. There is no one to jolt you from it, or no disturbance from ringing cellphones. These dreams only end when you fail, learn a lesson or achieve the desired outcome.

These dreams can cost you everything. Your house, car, savings, precious family time, tons of sleep, many Friday night happy hours with friends, and summer vacations.

But, in turn, those same dreams can also give you the independence and freedom to do all the aforementioned, plus a comfortable lifestyle, the ability to take care of your friends and family, give back to your community and the world, a story to motivate others, wealth, access to nicer things, a powerful network of colleagues and acquaintances, peace of mind, happiness, or whatever you want to accomplish.

These dreams are a gamble, no one ever knows the outcome. You can put all your chips in and hope for a win, but on the flip side you can fail miserably.

But, despite all this, don’t let your dreams scare you. They only seem intimidating, but the moment you make the first step towards them you have already won.

A dream is more than just a figment of your imagination, it is something that can be your reality. Think of it as a destination just sitting there waiting for you to arrive.

It exists, somewhere out in the ether, it is just for you to turn on your GPS and find it.

You might get lost, re-routed or experience car trouble, but once you start the journey, the destination is only so much closer.

So again, don’t be scared of your dreams, because they are not scared of you. They want you to embrace them and make their fruits your reality.

Start the GPS and find the destination of your dream/s today.

  1. Completely agree! Sometimes, the prospect of failure is too daunting… But we need to move forward and ahead of that fear! Took me a while to understand that, but I’m glad I did as soon as I have. 🙂

    1. Thanks for your feedback Amber. Indeed, we easily succumb to fear, and find it so difficult to give in to our dreams and work hard to make them a reality. However, with small steps and some practice, you will learn to embrace failure and learn from those mistakes as you make the leap after your dreams. One Love.

    1. Thanks for your feedback Jaimie. Your answer hit the nail on the head, by not trying, you haven’t even given yourself a chance to fail. As the saying goes, “Nothing beats a trial but a failure.” Good luck and just work on your courage to go after what scares you. One Love!

  2. Lovely post. Very thoughtful and insightful. I agree – following your dreams requires perseverance and resilience. I think part of the reason it’s so scary is that we fear those feelings of failure if things don’t work out as we hoped. Following your dreams requires you to take a leap of faith, knowing that it’s going to be hard and there’s always the risk it might not work out. But that doesn’t mean it isn’t worth it. Thank you for this post. Keep writing 🙂

    1. Thanks for your feedback. I appreciate the kind words. I concur, failure is a real deterrent for many people, it is the deciding factor that influences every decision they make and overall their lives. I can relate to that and I think we all can in some way, but we have to find the courage to do things that scare us or else fear will always win. One Love and I checked out your blog, keep writing as well. Bless!

  3. Sadly, breaking out of my shell is one of “my dreams” that I’m scared to conquer. Simply for being neglected or not accepted. I’ve never responded well to neglect. Yet, I’ve yet to BE neglected. I guess that’s what make it my fear. Maybe one day. I’m on that path. I’m better now than I was yesterday. I’m sure I’ll be better tomorrow than I am today. Bless. 🍷

    1. Thanks for your feedback Larissa. That is a fear for a lot of people, but the question you should ask yourself is, why do you think neglect scares you so much? Were you teased in school or as a child, do you see it around you and are scared of receiving it yourself? What do you think is the cause for that fear. Maybe when you find that out and take actionable steps to address it, you will be able to make that first move out of your shell. I wish you all the best on your path to reaching that point where you are not scared of your dreams. One Love!

      1. Thank you kindly. More than likely all my years of school. Even discrimination was done, heavily. But, at that time, I never saw it as that. So, could possibly be that it’s affecting me now. It shouldn’t, blindly, it is. Bless love! 🌹

        1. Yes I understand, I got bullied or teased in school sometimes as well and it can let you question your worth sometimes, but you never let it define you. Psychologically, I think it can affect you later on in life, even indirectly, but the only way to break that fear is to build up your strength and resolve to accepting criticism and ridicule. This is a process and you can still be affected emotionally, but the more you open yourself up to something the stronger you should become. You won’t know unless you try. All the best. 🙂

  4. I love this post, Dave. It will absolutely resonate with everyone. I have been afraid of my dreams ; I know I have missed chances because of fear of failure or fear of actual success. I had chances to progress with my singing carreer and although I had all the support and encouragement I could have asked for, I held myself back- and not for want of talent but because of fear.
But, I can tell you this: the dreams that often manifest themselves in the ashes of the burnt out ones- rise up so beautifully on golden wings found anew- that you come to comprehend that perhaps the dream you thought was meant to take flight, were born to die, so that your true destiny could rise up . I’m living my dream now – my true essence. I had to go through those steps to be who I am and get where I am.
I’m reminded so profoundly of The Alchemist.

    1. Thanks for the love Maria. I am glad to know this post spoke to you. I think we can all relate to being fearful of our dreams, I know I have. I co-founded a restaurant company four years ago that failed last year, and within all that heartbreak and disappointment I have found so many opportunities, not to mention the volume of lessons learnt, so I definitely concur. Dreams are scary for many reasons, but if we can sum up the courage to make the first step we would be amazed at what we can achieve. I am happy to know that you have found your dream and be able to live it everyday. That is the biggest blessing of all. Continue dreaming and making those dreams a reality. One Love.
